My First Post… no really it’s me

by markm, under Photos/Video, Update by Mike

Hello all, nice to be online after plenty of time well and truly out of action. I posted a message through my lovely wife Moni a week or so ago stating I would post a message myself when I could do it myself and here it is via voice recognition software. Typing is to come – I tried it today and it does not look too far away.

I am now settled in to the rehabilitation centre and am underway with physiotherapy and occupational therapy. I can eat a little bit myself but I must admit it is a real circus act – please enjoy the video that we’ve attached of my first meal. (see embedded video at bottom of post) I’ve also been playing with Ashley and because she’s three years old our drawings are very similar. I’ve also attached my first drawing done completely with my left shoulder. It is of course of no one else other than Humpty Dumpty. Humpty is a standing joke between Ashley and I. It is the first thing she learned to draw herself. I also attempted to sign the drawing but self-admittedly my signature is very ordinary.

My very original interpretation of Humpty

I want to thank you for your support and your feedback and responses on the website has been overwhelming and certainly helped me get to this point. I’ve enjoyed reading from various people everyday including some lovely surprise guests as well as regular responses from wonderful friends and family.

A few people have been in to visit recently and have asked a few questions about the accident. I hadn’t wanted to put any details up until I had dealt with it mentally and could post the message myself. Whilst on a training ride on Beach Rd, I was hit by a vehicle. This forced me out of control. In front of me was a parked vehicle and I hit it rendering me unconscious and causing my broken neck.

I am thrilled to be back online and able to communicate with this wonderful world. I look forward to posting more messages as my skills and stamina improved by the day thank you all.

Regards,

Forbesy

Great work Forbesy. Reminds me of a night we had on the turps in Sydney with Larry. You’re doing much better than Larry did. Here’s looking forward to a few more! I may have to borrow your Camelbak.
Was good to see you in action yesterday, can’t wait until I can get your chair souped up to take on the pedestrians. Willow.

    Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant!

Love the post, the art and the vid. Hope you have some real catchy titles waiting for the next instalments – Mon has set a very high bar. El Boy got Humpty straight away. Send it to Tate Modern – worth millions. El also loves watching you eat. Eight times so far – he thinks it could be chocolate (cos that is all anyone eats). Love Sal and El (Teg is asleep, but will show her when she wakes). Go Uncle Mike, the World has been waiting for your return xx

HA!! Mr Forbesy. Good to see you today, been thinking about the Humpty drawing….that’s better than what I can draw!! I’m a shithouse artist…better stick to the logical IT stuff, it’s better that way! : )

  • Lexie

    Hi Mike,
Fatastic to hear directly from you. Looks like you have even made progress in the last couple of days. The kids also keep wanting to watch Uncle Mike on the computer. Take care of each other. Remember the self-set Blackbutt challenge. All our love,Lexie, Simon, Lily and Seb

Sorry we didn’t make it in this week, we missed you, but the progress in one week is incredable. I look forward to the video demonstration of you brushing your teeth, I think that will be even more entertaining. Great to see the your achievments, and your smile through all the obsticals that are on your pathway to home. Moni you are just remarkable, and you Mike extraordinary. I believe in you both lies the miracle. See you next week.
    Lorraine and Simon.

  • Sean

Dude! You’re the only bloke I know who can make eating with a utensil look all fit and hardcore. When I found out about the accident, I must admit it wasn’t long until I had mental images of you doing one-armed pushups on the bed, chin-ups off the door frame and learning foreign languages whilst doing bicep curls lifting Ash. And probably Mon, too.

After being handed this catastroph$ck, I can’t believe how well you have both picked yourselves up, and continue to garner the monumental amount of energy it must take to deal with this, every day.

I hope you are getting lots of lovin’, too, Mon, and support when you need it – and Lord knows you are going to need it!

I for one can’t wait for the book, movie, Denton appearances, Paralympic medals, gossip mag slander (ooh, Mon reveals all!), and being able to nonchalantly say, ‘Yeah, I know Mike and Mon.’

Looks like you’ve got each other, which I think is a necessary and sufficient requirement for getting out the other side of this.

    We’re thinking of you!

    Sean, Clare and Lily

    Tyres!
I have been following your progress through this website for a while now, but haven’t found the right words to say. I’m not much for prayer, but if thinking about you counts for anything, I’ve been thinking about you a lot! Your determination and never-give-up attitude certainly inspire me and I dare say many others. I also have to say that Mon also has what it takes, and as a team, you two are truly scary! I’ve got to drop in for a visit sometime soon – wouldn’t mind taking a look at the rugby – those guys certainly don’t hold back.

Keep up the good work, and I hope to see you in the flesh soon,

    Dave

    Hey mate!
It’s so great to hear from you!!
Apologies for not getting in to see you, but I had a very persistant chest infection which lasted many-a-month, and didn’t want to visit you while it was even remotely present. I’ve since started a new job (got out of Telstra…well.. kinda) and so have been a little busy.

BUT having said that, hope to get in there soon on an available day off and catch up with you and Mon.

    Hi Forbsey,
Great to see you on Friday, now that I have an excuse to buy those profiteroles, well what’s a girl to do but eat them as well! Got to share with your mates and all. Also to note, once Willow soups up the chair it’s only a 5 minute drive to Clifton Hill via the Fairfield Boathouse where the creator of said profiteroles is!
Tell Ash I’ll be back for round 2 of Thomas the Tank versus The Fire Truck SMACKDOWN next week.
Mon, your’e a marvel as always, see you next week, I will bring my Claire in for a play with Ash. xxx

  • Jacquie

All of you are amazing! Mike… you truly are an inspiration to us all and it was amazing to read a post from you and to watch you in action! I remember spending many hours drawing humpty for Ash – I am sure she is loving watching, teaching and learning from her daddy.
Can’t wait to see you all soon. I am home next week and will be in ASAP.
Keep up the amazing progress and be sure to give mon and ash a big hug for me.
    Lots of Love, Jacquie
P.S I know you will be back in the blue house and we will all eating monis amazing christmas brunch spread this year – I don’t doubt it for a second!!

  • Jo

What an amazing difference 10 days can make – careful, you’ll end up with indigestion eating at that pace. As for the drawing – frame it, excellent piece of artwork, I’ll bet Ash was very proud of her clever daddy! See you in a few days – lots of love to you Mon & Ash!

  • Selim

    Forbesy,
Great to see you on Saturday, your progress has been astounding. I will bring the kids on the next visit, look forward to catching up soon.

    Dear Forbesy,

How wonderful to see you in action! We have been watching you and your fabulous family via this brilliant website over the last few weeks. Always amazed, but really just reminded of the entirely determined Forbesy that I lived with all those years ago in Randwick. Along with your upcoming birthday and that other event I will always associate with you (Olympics of course!) – I have been reminded it is high time I actually wrote to tell you you are clearly still the entirely determined and inspirational man I know! So, happy birthday Fops, it is clear you are going to leave me in your dust once again with your achievements. We are thinking of you, Monica and Ashley, and will be eagerly watching your recovery.

Our long distance love and thoughts,
Mel Evans (Rackham), George, Laura and Sophie

Mike, I am truly gobsmacked and humbled by your incredible tenacity – have been before & now even more so. Makes me think very carefully about what true “success” is – I think you have found it through sheer guts. Moni & Ash share (and I’m sure also bolster) your incredible strength. Dan & I are thinking of you all and following the updates regularly. Stay strong.

    Hey Mike and Family,
Just a brief note on behalf of the Simister clan, as Jill and Tezz are yet to understand the world of “blogs” so I am sure Mum will still get on the phone to your Mum to check in on your progress.
This site is amazing, of course bought a tear or two to my eye- you really are an inspiration and your high spirits have me in awe.
I will keep reading your blog for updates on your progress and of course to see the rest of the artwork to come!
Our thoughts and well wishes are with you and your family, Love Peta and the Simisters, Jill, Terry, Jo and Tom (and extended fam) xx

    Hi Mike,
I had the pleasure of enjoying the SKCC ball on Saturday night and was taken by your story and the support all of the club offered you. My wife Jo and I met your wife and exchanged many Talbot memories or were they nightmare’s????. It was like hearing my story over again and we felt for yours and Mon’s situation knowing what an effort it is to make it through the Talbot daily grind. I can assure you there is light at the end of the tunnel and I’d be only too happy to help with some advice for you personally and for you and Mon on how we have handled the in’s and out’s of Talbot, access to a variety of aids and the TAC. For you and all your friends out there I can offer some hope as I was told that shoulder and upper arm movement would be a positive outcome. I fractured C4,5 &6 and stuffed my spinal cord good and proper. At our first “team meeting” (I use this term loosely as they weren’t on my team) I totally lost it at the pessimistic narrow mined “team” (there i go again) that was there for our support and I told them I would walk out of Talbot when I leave. Clearly at this stage I was feeling like my ijury was just like any other I’d had and it would mend and I’d be all good again. They all nodded there heads and smiled. Anyhow sorry to ramble but I showed them and I did (after 6 months in there) walk that figgin sliding door threshold to get out of there for good.
Its now been 5 years but after many hours of physio and excercise per week I am able to walk on crutches, ride a recumbant bike (slowly 15kph) oh! flat ground is prefered but its still awesome to get out with the kids and ride along the beach. After a long time in the chair it was the most exilarating thing I could have done. It was my beginning to freedom and real independence. I still use my chair for day to day use and saturday nights on the tear but with some specialty rehab in the states I’m embarking on next week I’m hoping at a minimum to get off the Baclofen and improve my walking see:www.projectwalk.org
I would like to encourage all your friends to not forget you’re the same guy and get in to see you as this is the single most important thing in your recovery. You’ll get your head around your injury, that’s the easy bit. Being motivated by your friends and family is what makes it all worth it. By the way I own and run a successful building company and employee 20+ people. Dont stop pushing or trying to do better than the able bods. Its not that hard to achieve and from what I’ve learned about you, you’ll be less disabled than most able bods.
I’d like to come and meet you and share some stories. Let me know when’s a good time to come in. I’ll give you a call to arrange.

Keep your head up, it gets a shit load better. My life is normal again. Well sort of!

    Cheers

    Mick Hill.

Hey Forbsey – Firstly that’s an excellent drawing – it’s not a bad likeness of humpty actually. Your eating skills are excellent! – that is an incredible achivement. I looked the same when I recently broke both my arms – it’s a meagre comparison I know but I do now appreciate that feeling of when spoon finally reaches mouth. I did spend a few meals crying into a bowl. Keep up your incredible progress. A special hello to Monica she is amazing and you two are working so well together – I’ll try to get the thesauraraus out for my next message but for now – mmm just incredible.

  • Jo Metcalfe

Well, Forbesy, you look great and its wonderful to hear from you in your very own posts. Nice forking – you’ve always been good at that. I’ve been thinking of you a lot and watching your astounding progress and I berate myself for being amazed because I remember getting up mid-morning at 405 Anzac Pde or Alison Rd and you’d already achieved more than all of us had in a week – a month – a year. Keep it up as I know you can. Love seeing those YouTubes too.
    Love and good vibes
    Jo, Dave, Cameron and Holly.

  • Ali

Hi Mike, Ali here. We met at Telstra while both working for BearingPoint. Pretty amazed by you back then (still remember your poor dog) and even more amazed now by your attitude and approach. You are truly an inspirational person. Regards, Ali …

The principal reason why men and women opt to straighten their hair is to remove curls. This can either be carried out on a day to day basis applying a heated styling tool known as curling irons or by a chemical method identified as relaxing. Just before going ahead with Chemical Hair Straightening it is very suggested to seek to guidance of a expert stylist so that you are completely conscious of what the method entails.
